Awami National Party
About A.N.P.
National Awami Party was founded in Dhaka (Bangladesh) in July 1957. The president was Maulana Bhashani and the general secretary Mahmudul Huq Osmani. In 1967 NAP split mainly into National Awami Party (Bhashani) and National Awami Party (Wali) and some smaller factions, such as Mazdoor Kissan Party. The NAP was banned twice during it's 8 year long existence, the first time under Yahya Khan’s government and the second time in 1977 by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's government to pressure the then national opposition leader, Khan Abdul Wali Khan. It was then resurrected under the name National Democratic Party. In 1986, the National Democratic Party merged with several other groups to form the Awami National Party. Abdul Wali Khan was elected it's president and Sindhi nationalist Rasul Bakh Palijo was elected party secretary general. The strongholds of ANP are the Pushtun areas of Pakistan.
